Women purchase over 50 percent of all new cars, so it's hardly a surprise that February 12 was named Women's day at the annual Chicago Auto Show. Women were offered guidance and assistance in a number of car topics.
Kristin Varela, chief mom and senior editor at Mother Proof, a car review website geared especially to women who are looking for features that are most valuable to them and their family was on hand to offer women her unique perspective in helping women select cars. Mother Proof presented the Mama Said Cafe, where the website's picks for the top new family vehicles for 2008 were unveiled. Attendees were given expert advice, free coffee, interactive games and a children's play area.
"Women purchase 53 percent of new cars and influence 85 percent of all car sales decisions. But by and large, automotive reviews and car buying advice is still generated by men and often geared to automotive enthusiasts," said Varela. "The women of Mother Proof are excited to share their perspective, from one woman consumer to another, in a relaxed and inviting cafe environment at the Chicago Auto Show. That's what our site is all about, sharing advice, one girlfriend to another." Mother's Proof worked closely with the Chicago Auto Show to develop the programs for the Mama's Day Cafe.
The activities offered by Mother Proof Presentation kicked off with the presentation of the 2008 Mother Proof award followed by appearances by industry experts who shared car buying tips, advice on raising responsible teen drivers and things to know before walking into a dealer show room.
Kids were also encouraged to participate in the day's events. A vehicle design expert from Chrysler led kids in their own process of creating and drawing their own car designs.
Other events included Suzanne Johnson from OnStar presenting "The Must-have Car Security and Safety Feature That Can Save Your Life" seminar, Dan Irvin of Kids Safety First who talked about "Simple Safety Tips to Keep Children of All Ages Secure on the Roa,” Joni Stuker from the website Her Car Matters who gave a well received talk about “Car-buying Negotiation Tips for Women" and Janette Fennell from Kids and Cars who presented the seminar "Protecting Your Kids from Non-Traffic Motor Vehicle Tragedies.”
The special day for women proves extremely popular every year and has turned into an annual tradition that draws women an companies that cater to women in large numbers, turning the Chicago Auto Show into a welcoming environment for women who take their car buying seriously. Women were admitted to the show for half of the regular $10 admission fee. "This has become a great tradition for our show," said Auto Show Chairman Bob Loquercio. "Many of our exhibitors will offer special Women's Day seminars to help female customers be better equipped to make their transportation decisions. From the Chicago Auto Show side of the day, we'll open our doors to all women for half off the regular $10 admission fee for a ticket."
